Wills: When should I make one and can I do it myself?

Why should I make a will?

Leaving a Will not only ensures that your final wishes about your money, property, and other assets are carried out after you die, but it also provides a sense of peace of mind. It’s important for everyone to have a Will, even if you think you don’t have much to leave, as it can also be used to set out future care plans for your children should you and your partner both die. A Will is also essential for unmarried partners. If one partner dies, the other may not inherit their estate, which could potentially leave the remaining partner in significant financial difficulty. However, we understand that thinking about your death and your final wishes isn’t always easy but having these conversations is essential.

Let’s discuss when it is the best time to make a Will and whether you can do it yourself or need a professional to support you.

When should I make a Will?

The simple answer is as soon as possible. Many people put off writing a Will until later in life, but we don’t know what is around the corner. For this reason, it’s better to create a Will as early as possible. This is particularly important if you have children or have bought a property.

If you die without a Will, your possessions and assets may not be inherited by those you would have intended. This could lead to a situation where your loved ones are left without the financial support you had planned for them. To avoid this scenario, it’s advisable to create a Will sooner rather than later and remember to keep it up to date if your circumstances change.

Can I make a Will myself?

It is possible to make a Will yourself, and there are Will kits available to help you complete your last Will and testament. However, this isn’t something we would advise. If you do choose to make your own Will, we recommend that you get it checked by a solicitor to ensure it is correct and valid.

If your Will contains any mistakes or unclear instructions, it could cause serious issues and complications when you’ve died for beneficiaries, and your executor may have to rectify any mistakes and face legal fees. Seeking the help of a professional can provide you with the reassurance that your Will is accurate and valid.

Engaging the services of a solicitor or a professional Will writing service can provide you with the assurance that your Will is accurate and, most importantly, valid. Remember, planning ahead by making a Will can give you peace of mind that your final wishes will be executed and sorting your estate will be easier for your loved ones.
